Michael Splinter Mike Splinter was appointed president and chief executive officer and a member of the Board of Directors of Applied Materials in April 2003. A thirty-year, veteran semiconductor industry executive, Mr. Splinter has led and managed the largest semiconductor manufacturing operations in the world. He has been at the forefront of process development and implementation of high volume manufacturing for many of the industry's most significant technology transitions. Prior to joining Applied Materials, Mr. Splinter worked for nearly 20 years at Intel Corporation. Most recently, he was executive vice president and director of the Sales and Marketing Group, responsible for Intel's sales operations worldwide. In addition, from 1984 to 2001, he held various executive positions at the company, including executive vice president and general manager of the Technology and Manufacturing Group, responsible for all technology and manufacturing operations worldwide. During his tenure as Technology and Manufacturing group head, Mr. Splinter was in charge of the development of industry-leading technologies, the deployment of world-class manufacturing processes and on-time delivery of all Intel products. He was responsible for the critical development of manufacturing technologies for major industry transitions, including the move to 300mm wafers and the shift to 130 nanometer devices. Mr. Splinter began his career at Rockwell International where he was a development engineer in the firm's Electronics Research Center. At the time he joined Intel in 1984, Mr. Splinter had risen to manager of Rockwell International's Semiconductor Fabrication Operations. He holds two Rockwell patents: one for the quarter micron transistor process, and the other for microwave annealing of implanted junctions. Mr. Splinter is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, earning both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering. He is the recipient of the California-Israel Chamber of Commerce International Partnership Award for his contributions to the Israel economy, as well as the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Wisconsin. He has presented and authored numerous papers and articles. His hobbies include skiing, golf and stamp collecting. |
