If one word best describes one of last night's guests on "The CEO Show," that certainly encapsulates the spirit of Sam Liccardo, downtown Councilmember in the City of San Jose.
This Harvard trained Lawyer, who worked for years in the office of the District Attorney prosecuting crimes against kids, and additional years as a federal prosecutor, has invested his life to public service rather than seeking private gain.
When I asked him about whether he had a "hidden talent," he joked about eating 96 shrimp in one sitting while an undergraduate at Georgetown. What he didn't say is that this well-rounded leader is an All-American Triathlete, proving you can have both brains and brawn.
Councilman Liccardo is the best kind of public servant, and the citizens of San Jose are fortunate that there are people of his caliber in public life.
My other guest last night was Mark Ritchie, CEO of Ritchie Commercial. He is articulate, successful and incredibly committed to the success of downtown San Jose. When you look at his resume, or hear him speak, what jumps off the page is that he not only talks the talk, but walks the walk when it comes to community involvement.
What is even more remarkable about Mark is that his love for community spans two major cities in our region. As a San Francisco native and resident, he is intimately involved in the corporate and civic culture of that great city. But while he lives in San Francisco, he truly loves San Jose. His passion for the downtown's success is apparent in everything he does. We need more like him.
